SummerLab at Boston University CityLab offers high school students an authentic, hands-on biotechnology experience. Participants will delve into state-of-the-art CRISPR gene editing, a technique recognized by the Nobel Prize, and explore its applications in curing human diseases. The program also includes a variety of molecular biology labs such as bacterial transformation, cell culture, DNA quantitation, and nanoencapsulation. Students work in teams, assuming the role of a biotechnology company to design and execute experiments, fostering scientific thinking and problem-solving skills. The curriculum emphasizes both the scientific techniques and the ethical and social considerations surrounding these new technologies. The program culminates in a poster session where students communicate their findings.
SummerLab meets Monday-Friday from 9 AM to approximately 3 PM each day, with doors opening at 8:30 AM.
The ideal student is entering 10th grade through the first year of college, is at least 15 years old by June 30, 2026, and has a strong interest in hands-on biotechnology and molecular biology.
