The Tufts University Engineering Design Lab is a two-week, in-person pre-college program for high school students interested in engineering, robotics, and computation. Students will engage in hands-on projects and expert-led sessions, developing a foundational understanding of engineering and robotic skills. The curriculum focuses on fabrication techniques, including engineering design, computer-aided design (CAD), 3D printing, laser cutting, and woodworking, utilizing the state-of-the-art Nolop Makerspace. Participants will also delve into the theory, hardware, and software of robotics engineering, building their own robotic platforms and learning about sensors, motors, and algorithmic control using Python programming via Jupyter Notebooks.
Throughout the program, students will work independently or in small groups on daily challenges and a final engineering design project, fostering collaborative and team project skills. Guest speakers from Tufts University and industry will provide insights into careers, research, and real-world problems in robotics and engineering. Outcomes include a deeper understanding of engineering and design, experience with rapid prototyping and client-centered design, and hands-on practice with maker technologies.
The academic portion of the program generally runs Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm, with interactive, hands-on sessions, guest speakers, and dedicated project work time.
