The BU CityLab Biotechnology SummerLab offers high school students an authentic, hands-on laboratory experience in biotechnology. Participants engage in state-of-the-art CRISPR gene editing, a technique recognized by the 2020 Nobel Prize, and explore its applications in curing human diseases. Beyond CRISPR, students perform a variety of molecular biology labs, including bacterial transformation, cell culture, DNA quantitation, and nanoencapsulation. The program emphasizes critical thinking and scientific inquiry, allowing students to design and execute their own experiments as part of a research team. Ethical and social considerations surrounding these advanced biotechnological techniques are also integrated into the curriculum. The program culminates in a poster session where students present their findings to family, friends, and Boston University scientists.
SummerLab meets Monday-Friday from 9 AM to approximately 3 PM each day, with doors opening at 8:30 AM.
